but extremely powerful.

A powerful and sane pattern for handling a common template over several 
pages is shown in the Zope TAL documentation near the end of 
<http://www.zope.org/Documentation/Books/ZopeBook/2_6Edition/ZPT.stx/AdvZPT.stx> 
under the heading "Whole Page Macros". If I had read this before I 
started building sites with PHPTAL, it would have saved me a lot of 
hassle. (Skipping straight to that section may make it easy for you to 
understand the whole macros thing, or it may confuse the heck out of 
you. Depends on your learning style, I guess.)
