I have started to take a look at AIR and am more excited than I thought I
would be.
Its not that it does anything that I didnt realize, but it struck me that
one could create, a video server with AIR. Given that Nicolas has written a
simple video server, I am wondering how much work it would be to make the
haxe communications API's use the AIR networking API's when compiled for an
AIR application. This would have the interesting effect of allowing haxe
video run within AIR.
Why would this be significant?
Well, one of the problems with internet video is that webcam video is
limited to the upstream bandwidth of typical home/cable modem users, which
typically isnt 600kbps, which is what is really necessary to capture
reasonable quality webcam video. But if the video server is local, then the
video can be recorded and uploaded after recording and/or editing is
finished.
I know you could do this currently with neko, but using AIR will be more
mainstream, with an easier installation process. Also, obviously there will
just be more AIR users than neko users so this could be something that could
help haxe gain broader usage. A flash based local video recording
application would be useful to everyone in the video uploading business.
I just think this would be a killer app right now.
